RIDDIM DRIVEN - MESHACH DANIEL FALCONER ROBERTS

image

FILTHY RIDDIM

One of my greatest fears is that on the night I propose the very moment the request leaves my lips the filthy riddim will drop to which my wife will respond to by singing Lady G ‘Breeze off’ I imagine that she will be so enraptured that by the second verse she will begin to aggresively rock her hips and violently slap her thighs as if caught up in some sort of rejection Haka. Upon finishing the song she will tell me the whole relationship was a joke and she never wanted the two bastard children we have. Both Beenie Man and Mr Vegas use this riddim to offer sentiments of female independence with ‘Let him go’ Beenie man calls for women to find self initiated liberty and Mr Vegas’ ‘Heads High’ propagates rarely for dancehall both female empowerment and oral chastity.

MR VEGAS - HEADS HIGH

LADY G - BREEZE OFF

GENERAL DEGREE - TRAFFIC BLOCKING

LP COVER COMMENTARY WITH KING BB

THOU - TYRANT

Not the sort of thing I have a lot of in my designated ‘white music’ wodge of vinyl, but the artwork is fucking amazing. I bought this at a gig they played in Brixton a while ago - which was set up my my good friend, and all round music freak/genius, James knight (whose alphabetical compilations you can see here). They played with Moloch and Pombagira in The Grosvenor, a pub with a history of crusty punk doom screaming shows. The show was utterly amazing. Probably the best gig I have ever been to, not least because I was expecting to hate every sludgey scream and ended up entranced, or possibly mentally stunned by the sheer volume and relentelessness of it all. I am a very sensitive person after all.
The record comes with a beautifully produced zine/liner note insert that is every bit as grim and scary as the music… Here is some it (on my sexy new rug):

LP COVER COMMENTARY WITH KING BB

EUGENE MCDANIELS- HEADLESS HEREOS OF THE APOCALYPSE

For a long time all I knew about Eugene McDaniels was that Chester P dropped this album title into a freestyle on the Dark N Cold video. Then I knew that he was the guy sampled by Tribe Called Quest and The Beastie Boy’s on Get It Together. I am sure this break is on a Quasimoto album too, but can’t remember where…
But I never really bothered listening to the originals until I got into soul and started trying to be a pretentious git.
This album is pretty confusing to listen to in that it swerves from soul into political rants into more chilled out jazzy instrumentals. Possibly the best track, and happily the only one I can’t find on youtube, is Parasite. It is a hauntingly beautiful ten minute epic about the arrival of white men in America and the subsequent destruction of the native indians. There is a big freak out at the end that makes my balls tingle.

LP COVER COMMENTARY WITH KING BB

image

If you are interested in modern music then you should know who Max Roach is. I used to walk past Max Roach park in Brixton during my formative years, and wonder who he was. That was when all I listened to was the Beatles and my Reservoir Dogs cassette (before my mother destroyed it trying to edit out the film excerpts)
My friend Val Wilmer, an amazing photographer and expert on Jazz and Blues, told me that there are a number of small parks in Lambeth named after Jazz musicians, because a woman on the council ages ago was a fan and made it her personal project to names swathes of South London after Jazz greats. I haven’t got around to looking into this yet. But it’s a nice story.
This isn’t exactly restful to listen to, but its a rare example of a Max Roach solo release, well worth getting for anyone who likes drums, jazz, or parks in Lambeth named after Jazz drummers…
Here is Max at work.
