So, last Bank Holiday weekend myself and fellow Shitting Fists/F.O.G. cohort, photographer extraordinaire and hetero life mate, Ben Rayner went to shoot Raekwon. It was a blazing hot Sunday and we decided to ride down to his telly, the Radisson in Canary Wharf. After some confusion as to where it was (and riding on a fucking motorway, never again) we got there 10 minutes late for a 1am shoot. Ben wasn’t best pleased about this but was quickly appeased when there was nobody there to meet us.

I heard the Olivelawn track ‘Hate’ on an amazing mix tape called Skate Video Days. You can get the mix here . Hate is the track i want to be listening to next time someone treads on my toes in a pub. Here is the song - sadly the only video i could find is clearly made by a 13 year old child, sorry.
Most importantly i love this cover because the guitars are all pointing at the preppy girl’s shocked face like a line of dicks. It’s pretty subtle. But i am a subtle guy.

We are excited that HIGHLIFE is performimg at Noodles and Broth VS GETME! this Saturday.
Here are some words he wrote:
“I was born and grew up in London, moving to New York at the age of 20, where I have lived for the last 6 years. I didn’t know anyone when I got there - and actually hadn’t thought I would really stay. I went out there on a wintertime trip with family, and having trekked through a blizzard on my last night, I ended up being offered a room to rent starting the next day. It was proposed to me by the one patron who happened to live upstairs from the empty bar. Needless to say, I took the room and ate my ticket. Through what seemed to me like an intensely focused fate, I quickly became close friends with some of the most forward thinking and brilliant musicians in the city - Animal Collective, Gang Gang Dance, Black Dice, Orthrelm, White Magic (of which I became a permanent member), etc. I was not aware of these bands prior to arriving in New York, and was greatly inspired by the new sounds they were making. I was looking for a way to bring the old folk and blues and spiritual music i loved, back through me, without feeling like a revivalist - and it was obvious that the way to do this was to play freely. I let go of chords and structures that i was stuck in and took a more shamanistic approach. I would try to attain a trance like state through playing guitar and singing, which soon became easy to transcend. And the path since then has been wider open. Life is ever beginning. HIGHLIFE!”
He also went to school with Mr Moneybags. Wow

We are throwing another FREE party with our friends over at Noodles and Broth.
High Life will be performing live. Having recently toured with Animal Collective, Sleepy Doug Shaw will be looping and sampling to build up primitive beats to accompany his acoustics and striking voice. Our favourite new act.
The first in a series of guest mixes comes from The Heatwave, experts in all things dancehall and reggae. Expect more mixes soon from some of our favourite djs and musicians.
Download it from our Music page

I couldn’t even remember the name of the street, so i had to look it up – but it turns out that occasionally walking along Pitfield Street for 5 minutes on Saturday mornings to play football is one of my most documented journeys from 3 years of living in London. It links Old Street roundabout to Angel, going through Shoreditch Park on the way – a pretty unremarkable route. Somehow it’s lined with, what feels like, dozens of off-licenses each only a few doors away from another. And nothing else. In fact, in comparison to the landmarks nearby it’s wholly unremarkable, so I’m not too sure why I’ve taken photos of the route on so many occasions. Probably just because I tend to have a camera on me at football.
Anyways, here are some photos from the journey which I’m sure are fun enough for anyone to enjoy…
As it’s in the Shoreditch / Hoxton area ‘artists’ like to ‘get creative’ in the park. That’s why there’s a dreamcatcher in the tree instead of above someone’s bed or in a bin.
The Ice Cream Van sits next to the park all day and looks unlike any Ice Cream Van I’ve ever seen. It doesn’t even have a ‘Mind That Child!’ tagline on the back. It looks more like a disused paramilitary vehicle that has been decorated with old CDs. I’m fairly certain it’s not an artistic statement. The (emaciated) Lion Club is a fairly sorry sight. It’s use of parentheses only add to the sadness.
Despite it’s pleas for youth, there are seemingly only old people living nearby… Although, the observant viewer will notice some of the football crew in the background.
This off licence sells cheap booze, which is a difficult prospect to get your head around, I know. To avoid any confusion about its purpose the owners have cleverly called the shop both ‘Off Licence’, and ‘Cheap Booze’. Any remaining chance of doubt as to its function is obliterated with the erection of two signs for each name.
I’m not the only person drawn to take photos of this lively part of East London. Such was his haste to photograph the roof tiles of this disused building, this guy decided to forego trousers in order to speed the exit from his house. A wise move.
