Playground Riddim
I recently finished reading a book called ‘Gentleman of Leisure’, which records a year in the life of Silky, a Pimp in New York
in the the late 1970’s. Silky’s really doing it, he’s making 100’s of thousands of dollars every year, he’s Hoes are all obsessively in love with him, he has a massive apartment, a ridiculous customised car and spends all his time buying tailored suits and at the turkish baths with his fellow pimp Dandy. By far and away the most Pimp thing he does however is get one of his pro’s to come over every morning and massage oil into his body for a couple of hours, which they happily do thinking he’s gonna give them a piece once there done but he never does, he just takes his pimp tax and sends them to work. My morning mistress is the playground riddim and the day starts with self moisturising to Who Am I - Beenie Man, getting dressed to Nike Air - Mr Vegas, and then eating my sugar puffs to Work Dem - Merciless. And do you know what I worked out from all this, is that Silky has a much better life than me and there’s just no getting round that.
Inspired by an eclectic mix of culturally specific and cult references
such as action heroes, comics, colourful B-movie posters and dancehall
album artwork, DDF works in felt-tip pen and pencil to create his own
comics, self-published zines, editorial illustrations, commissioned
posters and clothing artwork.
Deity, an imaginary Afro hair care brand conceived and existing in
DDF’s head, is an installation of both drawings and adapted
ready-mades inspired by traditional hand-painted African barber shop
signs and the message of faith and happiness that both these and early
House music (another one of DDF’s influences) are founded on.
Deity dictates a positive propaganda and a belief in the ‘Good Life!’
Daniel David Freeman graduated from Camberwell College of Art in 2008.
Throughout the three years of his BA Illustration course he was a part
of the Crystal Vision collective, exhibiting with its other members at
the ICA and Jaguar Shoes. Since graduating DDF has exhibited in a
group show at Chapter One together with Marcus Oakley, Jiro Bevis and
Colin Henderson amongst others and a 2-man show at Old Shoreditch with
Paddy Jones. He has also produced commissioned work for clients like
Vice Magazine, Dazed and Confused and Adidas.

LEE FIELDS - MY WORLD
New soul is up there with world music in the list of genres I never ever wanted to like. But it’s time to face facts: there are some amazing new soul artists, and people outside of America and the UK can make some decent music. World music is a sloppy and pretty much invalid term, but we won’t get into that now.
I bought this album sort of based on the cover and was overjoyed to find out it is fucking brilliant. It is almost as good as this video of Lee practicing with his band of skinny white geeks. Peep the spider web doorag:
oh- and a pretty sick handkerchief arrangement here:
